All’ospedale di Burbank è morto Garry Marshall, gigante della commedia televisiva americana e regista cinematografico, a causa di complicazioni legate a una polmonite, conseguenza di un ictus. Aveva 81 anni.
Una carriera costellata di successi, dall’esordio come autore televisivo, quando creò la serie di successo (e poi di culto) Happy Days e i suoi spin-off, Laverne & Shirley e Mork & Mindy, all’esordio alla regia con L’ospedale più pazzo del mondo. Il film che più di ogni altro gli regalerà la fama, però, è Pretty Woman, rivisitazione della favola di Cenerentola in versione contemporanea e successo commerciale del 1990 con Julia Roberts e Richard Gere. L’anno successivo, nel 1991, dirigerà un’altra coppia di successo, Al Pacino e Michelle Pfeiffer nel sentimentale Paura d’amare, prima di riformare il sodalizio Roberts-Gere con Se scappi ti sposo. Con Pretty Princess (e il successivo sequel) lancia nel firmamento hollywoodiano il futuro Premio Oscar Anne Hathaway, mentre in anni recenti si diletta con pellicole sempre più all’insegna dei buoni sentimenti come Quando meno te lo aspetti, Appuntamento con l’amore e Capodanno a New York. Proprio poche settimane fa è uscito nelle sale il suo ultimo film, Mother’s Day, con Jennifer Aniston e Kate Hudson.
