Bruce Springsteen annuncia il box set “The Ties That Bind: The River Collection”

È atteso il prossimo 4 dicembre 2015, via Columbia Records, il nuovo box set di Bruce Springsteen dedicato all’album The River. Intitolato The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, il cofanetto è disponibile in due versioni (quella con 4 CD e 3 DVD e quella con 4 CD e 2 Blu-ray) comprendenti il doppio album The River originale, l’album inedito The River: Single Album, un disco di outtake del periodo 1979/80, due preziosi documenti video, un libro illustrato di 148 pagine con 200 fotografie ed altro ancora.

The River, quinto album di Springsteen, uscì originariamente il 17 ottobre 1980 come doppio album e raggiunse la posizione n. 1 della classifica Top 200 di Billboard, mentre The River: Single Album è l’album di dieci brani che il songwriter americano incise nel 1979 come seguito di Darkness On The Edge Of Town del 1978 senza mai pubblicarlo. «Alle canzoni mancava quella sorta di coesione e intensità concettuale che mi piace avere nella mia musica. Così sono tornato in studio di registrazione», scrisse il Boss nel libro di testi e immagini Songs. Sette dei dieci brani di quest’album finirono su The River, alcuni dei quali con testi e arrangiamenti diversi, mentre outtake come Cindy e una versione rockabilly di You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) non trovarono spazio nel disco.

Per quanto riguarda la sezione video, il cofanetto include The Ties That Bind, un nuovo documentario di 60 minuti diretto da Thom Zimny contenente un’intima intervista a Springsteen (che scende nei dettagli compositivi di ciascuna delle canzoni presenti nell’album, presentando i brani anche in versione acustica) e Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour, Tempe 1980, un nuovo film realizzato con il materiale ripreso professionalmente nel 1980 utilizzando quattro telecamere e registrato in audio multitraccia. Il film contiene 24 canzoni (2 ore e 40 minuti) su 2 DVD tratte dal concerto che il musicista tenne il 5 novembre 1980 alla Arizona State University di Tempe. Considerato uno dei migliori show di Springsteen, il concerto contiene le prime versioni live di più della metà dei brani che compongono The River.

Il film include anche 20 minuti di immagini tratte dalle prove del River Tour, svoltesi a fine settembre 1980 a Lititz, in Pennsylvania, che mostrano Springsteen e la E Street Band lavorare agli arrangiamenti live di quello che allora era materiale inedito tratto dall’album che di lì a breve sarebbe stato pubblicato. Il film è stato recentemente montato dal regista Thom Zimny, collaboratore abituale di Bruce e vincitore di Grammy ed Emmy; l’audio è stato mixato in stereo e surround 5.1 da Bob Clearmountain partendo dalle registrazioni multitraccia originali, e infine masterizzato da Bob Ludwig.
