Pete Shelley, cantante e co-fondatore assieme a Howard Devoto dei Buzzcocks, è morto all’età di 63 anni – pare – per un attacco cardiaco. La notizia è stata inizialmente data dalla BBC, per fare in seguito il giro delle principali testate musicali nel mondo. Il frontman della punk band è morto in Estonia, dove viveva.
Il decesso di Shelley arriva a circa un anno dalle celebrazioni di Spiral Scratch, il 7” d’esordio della seminale formazione britannica pubblicato il 29 gennaio 1977 sulla personale etichetta New Hormones (tiratura 1000 copie iniziali). Shelley e Devoto formarono la band due anni prima, per debuttare live nel 1976 a Manchester come spalla ai Sex Pistols. Sono seguiti tre album e un primo stop nel 1981. La reunion è arrivata nel 1989. Shelley, nel frattempo, è stato attivo anche nelle vesti di solista: durante gli 80s scambiò le chitarre con i sintetizzatori sfornando hit come Telephone Operator e Homosapien. Il suo ultimo album The Way è uscito nel 2014.
