Una delle più famose popstar al mondo, George Michael, al secolo Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, è morto ieri, nel giorno di Natale, nella sua abitazione a Goring, nell’Oxfordshire. E’ quanto ha riportato per primo, durante la notte, il sito della BBC che ha appreso del decesso da un portavoce del musicista («It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage»). Il manager del cantante, Michael Lippman, ha specificato, in un secondo momento, che la causa della morte è legata ad un arresto cardiaco.
Ex membro del duo Wham! assieme ad Andrew Ridgeley, Michael aveva interrotto il tour del 2011 per una grave polmonite. In seguito, tra il 2014 e il 2015, era stato ricoverato per due volte, rispettivamente per un collasso e per un rehab presso il Kusnacht Practice di Zurigo. Recenti le notizie riguardanti un ritorno discografico accanto al produttore Naughty Boy con il quale stava lavorando ad un nuovo album a 12 anni da Patience (2004). Sempre del 2014 invece Symphonica, live album legato al suo Symphonica Tour del 2011-12. Dagli inizi di carriera ad oggi, George Michael ha venduto oltre 100 milioni di dischi (di cui 20 soltanto per l’album Faith) piazzando al primo posto delle classifiche sia britanniche che americane ben otto singoli tra cui Careless Whisper e Freedom! ’90. Tra i suoi maggiori successi, anche due evergreen targati Wham!, ovvero Last Christmas e Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.
