All’interno dell’ultima puntata del programma televisivo Vice News Tonight, andato in onda ieri sulla popolare televisione via cavo statunitense HBO, Patrick Carney dei Black Keys ha sparato a zero sull’ultimo singolo di Lady Gaga, Perfect Illusion, lead single dell’album Joanne, paragonandolo al classico commerciale degli anni ’80 Eye Of The Tiger («ma neppure associabile alla bontà di quello») e definendolo «come sentire Hulk Hogan che suona una fottuta chitarra».
Le reazioni della cantante e di uno dei producer coinvolti nella sua produzione, Mark Ronson (gli altri due come segnalavamo in precedenza sono Kevin Parker e Bloodpop), non sono tardate ad arrivare via social, con la prima a sfidarlo in un «guitar death-mach con Kevin Parker e Josh F☠️cking Homme (che suona la chitarra in Perfect Illusion)» e il secondo a ricordagli che neppure l’hit single Uptown Funk (13° canzone al mondo nella storia della RIAA a ricevere la diamond certification) lo aveva convinto tanto da affermare che «non avrebbe funzionato».
In tutta risposta, Carney ha postato un paio di clip: il primo con lo streaming di Hulk Hogan che suona la chitarra e il secondo con lui stesso ripreso in un negozio di strumenti con in braccio una elettrica e l’affermazione «questa è la mia sottoscrizione per la competition chitarristica». Di seguito lo streaming del suo intervento su Vice News Tonight e il testo completo delle sue affermazioni riguardo alla canzone di Lady Gaga.
«First of all, I hate guitars that sound like that. I’m lost because the guitar at the top of it sounds so shitty. It’s like “Eye of the Tiger,” but not even nearly as good as that. It sounds like Hulk Hogan is playing the fucking guitar. I met Hulk Hogan once, and he was really, really nice, and he did say this to me: “These fingers have never touched a fret. Been up and down the Florida coast playing rock‘n’roll all through the ’70s, never touched a fret.” I think that’s what he’s saying! He’s saying he was playing a fretless bass in a prog band or something. Fucking cool! But the thing is, that songs’s growing on me. I’ve heard it now. That’s one of those things. That’s the thing about music: The more you hear something, the more you like it. That’s why payola worked».
