Se la reunion degli LCD Soundsystem sembrava essere questione di tempo dopo la pubblicazione del brano natalizio, l’annuncio della partecipazione al Coachella Festival ha chiarito ogni dubbio. Il leader della band statunitense, James Murphy, ha postato sul sito ufficiale e sul canale Facebook una lunga e sentita lettera nella quale elenca i motivi della reunion, avvenuta dopo il “Long Goodbye” del 2011 con il concerto al Madison Square Garden.
Nel messaggio Murphy spiega che il vero motivo del ritorno della band è dovuto in gran parte a una grande quantità di materiale composta dal musicista durante gli ultimi anni («i write songs all the time. Sometimes they’re just weird songs i sing while changing a baby, or songs about annoying things that i sing to myself, or to friends while sitting at a bar, or about Christmas, or New York. […] Only a tiny fraction of these ever become Songs. […] Early in 2015, i realized i had more of those than i’d ever had in my life») e alla necessità di non buttare via tutte le canzoni e le idee maturate. In alcuni passaggi Murphy parla inoltre dei fan che si sono sentiti traditi dalla reunion – innescando una piccola polemica sul web – ma anche di quelli che hanno gioito alla notizia («we’ve always talked about how we’d never betray anyone who cares about us, but here we are now. Given the chance again to make new music with the people i care about, and who have given a big part of their lives to doing this weird thing together, and who wanted to do it again, i took it. And in doing so, i betrayed whoever feels betrayed by that action. I by no means think that everyone who liked our band feels bad right now. A lot of people who liked our band are very happy, and we’ve been pretty blown away by the almost overwhelmingly positive response»). Come scritto in precedenza, oltre a un tour, nei piani c’è anche la pubblicazione del quarto album della fomazione, su cui la band è ancora al lavoro e in uscita «sometime this year».
Nonostante lo scioglimento degli LCD Soundsystem, negli ultimi tempi Murphy si è tenuto impegnato con numerose attività: colonne sonore (While We’re Young), produzioni, ben 400 ore di musica provenienti dai match degli US Open e nuova musica per la linea metropolitana di New York, progetto purtroppo non approvato dall’ente dei trasporti della città.
